Quesnel is THE fan base of Barkerville supporters, says Barkerville Brewing Co. owner Russell Ovans, so it made sense to base his business right here. And though his craft beer brewery has only been running since January 2013, he has have received a groundswell of support, both from other local businesses as well as from Quesnel beer lovers.
The Barkerville Brewing Co. hopes to tell the world the Barkerville gold rush story through its beer. Their craft brews include customer favourites like 18 Karat Ale, Wandering Camel IPA and Prospector’s Peril Pilsner among other seasonal ales. In the short time he’s been here, Russell has already seen how supportive Quesnel business owners and patrons have been of shop local initiatives. He feels grateful to be a part of this grassroots movement and is looking forward to years of successful business in Quesnel. The company has already begun to support several local groups and events, and is looking forward to participating in the community as the business grows.

Meet Russell Ovans
Russell Ovans, a computer scientist by trade, was born into a family of entrepreneurs. "I guess it was in my blood!" he says of his penchant for starting businesses. The Barkerville Brewing Company isn't his first, and probably won't be his last. And it's a far cry from creating software and teaching university, just a couple of the jobs he's done in the past.
One of Russell's long time side-dreams had been to open a brewery. After much research and contemplation, he chose Quesnel as the location. After years of planning and months of building and installing equipment, the brewery began production in early 2013.
Russell said he's received tremendous support from the community. He is proud to produce a product that is tailored to the Cariboo and tells an important story. Russell is also happy to be able to infuse the local economy with a brand new local industry.
