Meet Gilbert Schotel
Big Country Printers has been a big part of the community for more than four decades. It is one of Quesnel’s oldest businesses still in existence, and owners Gilbert & Mellissa Schotel credit much of the business’ success to its loyal customers.
The business has been in the Schotel family since 1976 when Gary Schotel and his wife Alida first immigrated to Canada from Europe. They purchased the printing business, which was the original print shop for the Quesnel Cariboo Observer newspaper. Over the years the senior Schotels added a retail shop to its printing services.
Upon Gary and Alida’s retirement, the business was passed on to their son Gilbert who continues operations today along with his wife, Mellissa. They’re proud to carry on the family business, and they’re grateful to be able to live and work in Quesnel where the lifestyle is casual and the pace is laid-back and the people are friendly and personable. Work is demanding but when they find some down time they’re usually spending it outdoors.
