Meet Melissa & Brad Pollock
It was the pursuit of a family-friendly lifestyle and a love for pets that ultimately drew Melissa and Brad Pollock to Quesnel and the purchase of Pooch Palace in 2015. The business had been a part of the community for more than two decades when the Pollocks took over, and it, and Quesnel, turned out to be a perfect fit for their family. Brad grew up in Wells and so was already familiar with the area, and Melissa has been enjoying getting to know her new neighbours and making new friends around town.
Both Brad and Melissa appreciate what small town living in Quesnel has to offer. When looking for a new home for their family, one of the things that was most important to the Pollocks was being someplace that felt secure. “I feel safe where my children play,” says Melissa of Quesnel, its parks and public spaces and their own backyard. “It is a family-oriented community,” she adds, with many things for families to do, in and out of doors, casual and organized. Family time is important to the Pollocks so they spend as much time together as possible. One of their favourite family outings is visiting Barkerville. “We LOVE Barkerville and are out there every chance we get. Our kids love history,” says Melissa, and since Brad grew up in Wells he still has many friends in that area.
Operating their own business has given the Pollocks many opportunities to meet their fellow community members and like-minded pet lovers. It didn’t take them long to learn that locals are friendly and caring. They also noticed a culture of support for their independent shops and businesses that they are grateful for as business owners. “People are becoming more in tune to local businesses,” says Melissa, and more apt to seek services and goods from the very people who are their neighbours and friends in order to keep the local economy vibrant. Melissa believes Quesnel’s future is bright and “growing all the time.”
